If Altman was so seriously concerned about the negative potential of AI, why did he release it into the wild? His statements to congress look like an attempt to burnish his reputation, not a serious call for regulation. It’s much too late for that. Congress can’t even figure out how to regulate social media.

This has been an under the radar commentary from economists, philosophers and maybe even politicians for hundreds of years: humans have the power to choose which technologies they adopt and which they reject, but we don't choose, we let it happen.

The internal combustion engine turned out to be an existential threat: would we have rejected it?

Individuals choose that which benefits them now, here, in this lifetime. Most don't even consider the effects on their children or grandchildren.

Will it be different with AI? I doubt it. Not given how easily and obviously it can be weaponised - from a phone like yours.
